The Hebrew word “shemot” means “names” as found in Exodus 1:1
“And these (וְאֵ֗לֶּה-ve’eleh) are the names (שְׁמוֹת֙-shemot) of the sons (בְּנֵ֣י-bene) of Israel (יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל-yisrael) who came (הַבָּאִ֖ים-ha’baim) to Egypt (מִצְרָ֑יְמָה-mitzraemah) (אֵ֣ת-et) with Jacob (יַעֲקֹ֔ב-ya’acov), each man (אִ֥ישׁ-esh) with his household (וּבֵית֖וֹ-ubetow).”
